Good preparation reduces postoperative complications such as infection or catheter dysfunction.

Preparation
  • Mark the exit site with a permanent marker. To be done by the CNC or PD staff pre operatively in consultation with the surgeon.
  • Educate the patient. Usually done by the CNC, PD staff, medical officers or senior ward nursing staff.
  • Fast the patient from midnight the evening before if surgery scheduled for the morning. If the operation is planned for the afternoon, fast patient from 6 a.m. on the day of surgery.
  • Give aperients/suppository the evening prior to the operation as ordered by the physician.
  • Patient to have an antibacterial shower pre-operatively.
  • No abdominal shave is required. Theatre staff will attend the shave if required.
